Partial Hospitalization Program
A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for substance use disorders is a type of outpatient treatment program that offers intensive therapy and support for individuals struggling with addiction, but in a slightly different way than a full-time residential program.
Here's how it works: In a PHP, you attend the treatment program for several hours each day, typically five to seven days a week—our Orange County outpatient treatment program is Monday through Friday 9:30am-4:00pm. It's a bit like going to school or a job during the day. During this time, you participate in various forms of therapy, which could include group counseling, individual psychotherapy, and possibly activities like writing and creative projects. These sessions are designed to help you understand your substance use from the inside out, learn coping strategies to function better in life, and develop skills to resist the urge to use substances.

One of the key aspects of PHP is that you don't stay overnight at the facility. After the day's program, you go back home. This setup allows you to apply what you're learning in your real-life environment and gradually adjust to everyday life without the constant presence of substances.
PHPs are particularly helpful for those who have completed a residential treatment program and are transitioning back into their daily lives, or for those who need more support than what regular outpatient therapy can provide but don't require 24-hour supervision. It's a middle ground that offers structured support while allowing you to maintain some aspects of your normal life.

Why Is a Partial Hospitalization Program So Beneficial?
Affordability & Accessibility
Cost-effectiveness is a standout feature of PHPs compared to inpatient care. By eliminating overnight stays, they reduce overall costs, making intensive treatment more accessible. This affordability ensures more individuals receive the care they need without financial strain.
Flexibility & Personalization
PHPs adjust to individual needs, balancing treatment with daily life commitments like school or work. Each participant's therapy is tailored, enhancing relevance and effectiveness. This approach provides a personalized recovery journey, crucial for long-term success.
Community & Support
In PHPs, building a support network with peers is a key benefit. Regular interactions foster a community atmosphere, offering mutual support and shared experiences. The environment aids in developing social skills and gaining diverse perspectives on recovery.

Questions to Ask a California Partial Hospitalization Program
(and Our Answers):
How many hours a day and how many days a week will I need to be there?
Our PHP provides the highest level of outpatient treatment: 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. It's a bit like a school schedule, giving you enough time for therapy while letting you be at home each evening and weekends. Our program provides services Monday through Friday from 9:30am to 4:00pm. There are breaks and a lunch scheduled to ensure rest and comfortability.
What types of professionals will I work with in the program?
You'll work with a variety of professionals including therapists, case managers, possibly psychiatrists for medication management, and sometimes specialists like trauma therapists or nutritionists, all trained to help with different aspects of your recovery.
What happens if I have a really hard time or emergency after program hours?
Each day is structured to help you learn and practice new skills to manage your recovery. You'll have a mix of activities like group counseling, individual psychotherapy, psychiatric sessions, and life skills.
The Partial Hospitalization Program offers the opportunity to experience the entire Exist Clinical Model. There are four group counseling meetings per treatment day, each providing a different strength toward you feeling better—answers to your questions, different options to respond to your life and the people in it, and a plan for your future.
Throughout the week, you will meet with a personal therapist (to privately discuss your personal details), your case manager (who helps you get your life in order), and a doctor to develop a medication regimen for you, if desired.
How do you ensure my privacy and confidentiality in the program?
Your privacy and confidentiality are top priorities. We follow strict laws and guidelines to protect your personal information and ensure that what you share in the program stays confidential.
In California, partial hospitalization programs are bound by legal and ethical guidelines regarding confidentiality. Generally, the limits of confidentiality include situations where there is a risk of harm to you or others, suspected child or elder abuse, or when a court orders the release of information.
How long will I be in the program?
The length of time you spend in the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) can vary based on your individual needs and progress. Typically, a PHP can last anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months.
We regularly assess how you're doing to make sure you're getting the right amount of support for as long as you need it. Our goal is to ensure you feel ready and confident to manage your recovery when you complete the program.
If you are only able to complete treatment within a certain timeframe, we will do our best to consider your wants while prioritizing your needs. Give us a call.
