The short answer

How long is IOP at Exist?

How long is IOP? At Exist, intensive outpatient is three to five half days a week in Laguna Beach, for as long as that level of care fits. That often means weeks to a few months, followed by weekly therapy or a step up to PHP. We reassess as you go and never sell a fixed package.

The week has a set shape. The number of weeks follows what you need.

The week at Exist

What to expect in PHP and IOP each week.

Both programs run in the same Laguna Beach clinic with the same team. PHP is the full clinical day, IOP is the shorter day, and both send you home or to Truth House at night.

  1. A person sitting on a sandstone bench in a quiet coastal garden in soft afternoon haze, back to camera, a canvas bag beside them and a pale sun over the Pacific.

    IOP

Three to five half days a week, in the morning or the afternoon. Group therapy, 1:1, and skills you can use that same evening.

  2. A long dark walnut table set simply for lunch with plain plates and water glasses in a cream plaster room, a tall window with a pale sun over the ocean.

    PHP

A full clinical day, Monday through Friday. Four groups, a session with your therapist, case management, and lunch in the house.

  3. A small cream house on a Laguna hillside at blue hour with one warm lit window, a person at the front door with back to camera.

    Evenings

Nights are at home or at Truth House in Laguna Canyon. What happens in the evening comes back into the next day's work.

  4. A person standing where a coastal bluff trail splits into two paths at dusk, back to camera, both paths leading toward a huge pale sun.

    Review

The team checks whether the level of care still fits. You can step down to IOP or weekly 1:1, or step up to PHP.

What changes the length

What decides how long IOP lasts.

SAMHSA's guide to intensive outpatient treatment for substance use says length should rise or fall with clinical need, support at home, and psychiatric symptoms. The same factors come up whenever the Exist team reassesses your plan.

  1. Clinical need

How your symptoms respond, with trauma, mood, and substance use treated in the same week.

  2. Support at home

Whether nights at home are holding, or whether a room at Truth House makes more sense for now.

  3. The step-down plan

At Exist, PHP often steps down to IOP or weekly 1:1, so total time in care can include more than one level.

  4. What your plan approves

Some plans require approval before treatment and ask for proof that each level of care is still needed.
